Influence of KPop to Filipinos

Globalization enables the global dissemination of popular culture through various entertainment and consumer items, including films, music, television shows, fashion, and food. The spectacular growth in popularity of Korean drama and film, which began in neighboring Asian countries in the mid-1990s, has been dubbed the "Korean Wave," which translates literally as "flow of Korea." The recent growth of "K-pop," acronyms for "Korean Pop Music," has launched the Korean Wave into the global consciousness, as its popularity continues to spread beyond Asia and into the rest of the world. In the Philippines, Korean pop culture has been a vital influence on Filipinos since the early 2000s, primarily because local media companies aired Tagalog dubbed Korean dramas, which they called "Koreanovela," a combination of Korean and telenovela. K-pop is defined by a diverse range of musical styles, a consistent formula of blending catchy tunes with characteristic dance moves performed primarily by boy and girl bands, and a heavy reliance on social media as a primary distribution route. As the Korean 'idols' rose, plenty of the young generation became raved by them. Now that there are several Kpop groups, fandoms from different groups demand 'idol goods or Kpop merch,' which refers to products such as cups and towels and mementos or souvenirs made to satiate fandom's needs and may incorporate the star's facial image.

When the Philippine government imposed a health emergency in March 2020 due to the novel coronavirus, now COVID-19, Filipinos were locked in their respective homes with nothing to do. With the people's mental health deteriorating, they became more aware of what technology could do to help them cope during the lockdown. Due to the lack of activities, people of all ages relied on entertaining themselves through the use of mobile phones by watching Korean drama films and/or series on different streaming platforms (i.e., Netflix, Youtube, Viu), if not, browsing into social media applications.
